It's Almost Party Season: 4 Steps To Take When You're Injured At A Holiday Get-Together

Everett Cook

The holidays are just around the corner. That means it's time to start planning for the holiday get-togethers. If you're like most people, your calendar will be filled with gatherings that you're expected to attend. While you're preparing for those parties, it's important to remember that accidents can happen anywhere, especially when large crowds are gathered. Before you start attending parties this holiday season, take a few minutes to familiarize yourself with some important steps you should take if you happen to suffer injuries while at a party.

Seek Medical Attention

If you've been injured, you need to seek medical attention. Even if you think the injuries are minor, you should still be checked out by a physician. If the injuries end up being more severe than you first thought, you'll have the documentation you need to go after medical bills and other expenses.

Report the Accident

Don't just leave the party. Let the host know that you were injured. Ask for the name of their insurance company so that you can file a claim for your medical bills. It's important that you remain calm. Don't become angry or being yelling. Stay calm. If the host becomes angry or refuses to provide the information you need, be sure to seek legal representation. A personal injury attorney will be able to get the information you need to file a claim.

Document the Location

If you have a camera available, take pictures of the location – specifically pictures of the area where you slipped and fell. The pictures will document the condition of the premises at the time of the incident. This is especially important if your injuries could have been avoided with proper care by the homeowners. Not only that, the photos will serve as evidence should the homeowners alter the accident site before you have a chance to contact an attorney.

Preserve Your Clothing

When you get home, place everything you were wearing in a plastic bag and seal it. The clothing will serve as evidence if the accident is disputed by the homeowners. For instance, if you slipped and fell in a hole that should have been repaired – and the homeowners dispute the accident – your muddy clothing will provide evidence that you fell. For maximum benefit, take a picture of yourself wearing the clothing before you undress. The photograph will provide a timestamp that will coincide with the date of your injuries.

You don't expect to get injured when you go to a holiday get-together. The information provided above will help you know what steps to take should you suffer a slip and fall accident during a party. If you are having a difficult time obtaining medical help for your injuries, be sure to speak to an attorney, such as one from Putnam Lieb, as soon as possible.

About Me
Auto Accident Law 101

After being involved in a serious auto accident with a drunk driver, I struggled heavily with getting the driver's insurance company to open a claim. When the insurance company started pushing back, I knew I needed to do something. I spent a lot of time digging through the laws surrounding auto accident claims so that I knew what my legal rights were. I even talked with an auto accident attorney. I created this site to teach others about what I learned, including my court experience. I hope it helps you to determine how you should proceed with your auto accident case.
