Tips On Easing Your Children Through Divorce

Everett Cook

If you are in the middle of a divorce, you may wonder how you can get your children through the situation. It can be a very hard time to watch your children struggle with the breakup of your family, when you also are going through such a difficult time. But as a parent usually does, you need to put your children's needs before your own at times, and it's important to make sure that your children can get through this knowing that you and your ex-spouse still love the children just the same as you did before you divorced.

Talk With Your Children Honestly

The biggest thing you can do for your children is to be honest with them. Now, depending on how old the children are will depend on how much you share with them, or what details you give them. A younger child only needs to understand that while you and your spouse won't be together anymore, that you both still love the child very much and you always will. Smaller children tend to think that divorce is their fault, and it's important for both you and your ex-spouse to explain to the children that this is not any fault of their own.

Keep Your Emotions In Check

It can be difficult to keep your anger to yourself at time, and divorce can bring out a lot of angry and bitter feelings. It's important that your children not hear how you really feel about your ex-spouse. Even when you think they are not around and they are not listening, it's still best to select your words carefully. You are probably angry, and perhaps rightfully so. But the children don't need to hear any bad words about their other parent, and they could end up resenting you if you continue to bad-mouth the other parent in front of them.

Try to Work Out Visitation and Custody Arrangements

You want to make sure that you keep the best interests of your children as the priority. Try and work out a visitation and custody arrangement that benefits the children more than anyone else. Your attorney may suggest that you and your ex-spouse share custody, so that you have equal time and financial responsibility for the children.  Your attorney may also suggest a shared living arrangement, where the children remain in the marital residence, and you and your ex-spouse take turns living in the home with the child. Talk to your family law attorney about all of the different options regarding custody to find a balance that will work for everyone.

About Me
Auto Accident Law 101

After being involved in a serious auto accident with a drunk driver, I struggled heavily with getting the driver's insurance company to open a claim. When the insurance company started pushing back, I knew I needed to do something. I spent a lot of time digging through the laws surrounding auto accident claims so that I knew what my legal rights were. I even talked with an auto accident attorney. I created this site to teach others about what I learned, including my court experience. I hope it helps you to determine how you should proceed with your auto accident case.
