5 Tips For Getting The Most Out Of Your Divorce Consultation

Everett Cook

If you and your spouse have decided to get a divorce, your next step is to schedule a consultation with a qualified divorce lawyer. During this meeting, you will discuss the details about your divorce and can ask all the questions you want. Here are a few useful tips for getting the most out of your divorce consultation.

Bring Relevant Documents

It is not a good idea to go to a divorce consultation empty-handed. Before you leave for your meeting, remember to bring copies of your tax returns, pay stubs, prenuptial agreements, children's birth certificates, and any other legal documents that pertain to your divorce case. These documents will help your divorce lawyer get a clearer picture of your divorce.

Prepare a List of Questions

You likely have tons of questions you want to ask your divorce lawyer. For example, you might want to know how long the divorce process lasts or how much it will cost. However, in the midst of your meeting, you might forget some of the questions you have. That is why you should write down all your questions on a notepad and bring it with you to the consultation.

Be Truthful

While you might be embarrassed about certain details of your marriage and divorce, you should still be honest with your lawyer. He or she has heard it all before and will not pass any judgment. If you are not completely truthful, your divorce lawyer can't help you to the fullest of his or her ability.

Know What Your Goals Are

Before you head out to your divorce consultation, you should have a basic idea of what you want out of the divorce. For example, you may wish to stay in the family home or obtain full custody of your children. When you discuss these goals with your lawyer, he or she will determine if they are realistic or not.

Take Notes

During your initial consultation, your divorce attorney will provide you with a lot of information. To ensure you remember everything your lawyer tells you, take notes at the meeting. If you have any questions later on about what your lawyer said, you can refer back to these notes.

If you follow these helpful tips, you should have a successful first meeting with your divorce lawyer. Remember to leave a little early for your consultation in case you have to fill out paperwork beforehand.

About Me
Auto Accident Law 101

After being involved in a serious auto accident with a drunk driver, I struggled heavily with getting the driver's insurance company to open a claim. When the insurance company started pushing back, I knew I needed to do something. I spent a lot of time digging through the laws surrounding auto accident claims so that I knew what my legal rights were. I even talked with an auto accident attorney. I created this site to teach others about what I learned, including my court experience. I hope it helps you to determine how you should proceed with your auto accident case.
